i want to install avast,do i have to uninstall norton before downloading or will i be able just to go ahead and install my new virus protection

you could probably just install the new software.. remove Norton after.
Its a good idea to uninstall Norton due to the fact that some other antivirus softwares do not cooperate with previous versions of antivirus software.
you can disable it first then download the new one. delete it after that.

Yes make sure you only have one antivirus program, otherwise they start colliding.
you need to uninstall norton before you install avast,to do this go to start%26gt;control panel%26gt;add/remove programs%26gt;and remove all entries for norton anti-virus,a restart will be required to complete uninstallation

avast is very easy to install,it needs to be registered free within 60 days but will run in demo mode until then,to register use the link in the program

whatever you do ,dont use avast while you still have norton on your hard drive(registered or not)as any more than one anti-virus on a p.c can cause serious problems and in certain senario,s can fatally crash your p.c(to such a extent that you would need to format your drive and reinstall your operating system)
