Unable to use Disk Cleanup (MS's own version through Win XP)?

For what ever reason, I am unable to use XP's Disk Cleanup. It keeps throwing up the dialog asking me to send an error report. I never do, since I know they probably will not look at it anyways.

This problem started last week when doing my weekly computer maintenance. I didn't think anything of it then and just continued on without doing it.

This week however I am a little concerned that I am unable to use it. While I use CCleaner, I like the option to delete my system restore backups except the latest one. As far as I know, there are no other programs that will allow me to do this.

Other then doing a repair on Win XP, is there anything else that I can do?

I have done a virus check with resident scanner (Avast!) and online scan (Bitdefender). I have done adware and spyware checks as well. The virus scans turned up nothing and adware/spyware turned up the usual tracking cookies.

So what else can I do?

Unable to use Disk Cleanup (MS's own version through Win XP)?norton antivirus 2007

I use CCleaner as well on my XP system and I just do the following to get to disk cleanup...

My Computer, Highlight which drive you want to cleanup, click properties, under properties you should see the disk cleanup button.

Or, Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;Disk Cleanup.

I haven't had the problems you're having and I'm sure you've done the methods above, so perhaps you could do a System Restore to a state when it was operating fine, if you haven't deleted past restore points yet.

you may have windows programs running in the background that you are not aware of that's interfering with the cleanup. Go in to ms dos mode and at the prompt, enter c:\scandisk

this will run the cleanup without windows running. This should fix the problem.

Virus? ...?

McAfee VirusScan detected a W32/HLLP.Philis.ini (virus) which couldn't be removed, quarantined or cleaned. I checked the file location and it was D Drive. The CD that's in it is from a Base Mp3 Player I bought from Target. I tried scanning all files with avast! and AVG Spyware, neither detected anything. What do I do? D:

Virus? ...?norton antivirus

According to McAfee this virus is put into the hidden files and folders. AV/AS programs do not scan the hidden files and folders when you scan in the computers "Normal Mode". Use this procedure to open your computer and properly removed this virus. Make sure you McAfee is properly updated:

TEMPORARILY SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

3. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders", and clear(uncheck) the "Hide protected operating system files" check box.

IMPORTANT: Files are hidden by Windows for a very good reason. It is not wise to experiment with these files. Unfortunately, to successfully remove modern spyware we must turn this protection off temporarily. Please turn the protection back on when you have finished cleaning your system.

Whats the difference (function sense) between spyware, malware, firewall and antivirus?

Im just wondering.. i mean, is it essential to download each of one software for my PC safety or is the anti-virus having the appropriate army to guard my pc...

is Avast anti-virus enough to cover all..?

Whats the difference (function sense) between spyware, malware, firewall and antivirus?norton internet security 2008

Spyware - Usual bugs you. asking you to sign up for this and that.

Sometimes montiors websites visited and sends it to attacker to help the attacker to better catch your attention.

Malware - viruses, worms, trojans, and mass mailers

Can cause damage to system, destroy files, cause havoc

Firewall - 2 types - Stops unwanted traffic inbound and outbound

You can program a firewall to block under many characteristics like ports, IPs, or even protocols

Phsysical firewalls you hook up to your network before or after router/switch. Usually analyzes traffic by the packet(barebones of data). (data travels and is assembled again by bits %26 packets)

Software firewall is on your computer usually blocks and allows by the above charc.

antivirus - program that uploads a ".dat" file with a listing of viruses "in the wild" and blocks access to files that are infected either quarantining or deleting the file.

ZoneAlarm

TrendMicro

McAfee

Virus in computer ...HELP?spyware remove

Do you have comcast? If so, McAfee is a free virus program, it's pretty good, it just takes slow but that's just because it's scanning EVERY file throughout your computer.
Okay more than likely what you are looking at is malware that your virus cleaner cannot detect. If you like Avast keep it, if not download a free antivirus called Antivir. It has better detection than Avast and has scheduled scans, but if you are comfortable with Avast keep it. Just make sure you never have two antivirus programs on your computer at the same time, and keep it up to date. Now I would recommend you download Spyware Doctor Starter Edition and SuperAntispyware, both are free. Install and update each progam. Now disconnect your pc from the internet. Next do complete/full scans with both Spyware Doctor and SuperAntispyware. This will likely take care of the malware aspect of your infect, assuming it is malware and not a true virus. In some cases a scan in safe mode maybe necessary if you are still having issues.

Is it wise to run two different ANTI VIRUS on my system?

Window's XP, Ive been having Norton for quite some time and been happy with it. Recently, Ive ran to some problem with virus, ad ware,....so Ive added AVAST ANTI VIRUS. I'm not too sure if Ive done wise thing. PLEASE inform me if it is OK to have two AV or what ever you guys suggest. THANKS for all your inputs in advance.

ADD: every time i re-scan after Norton is done, with Windows live onecare safty scanner, it shows more infected area than Norton did, what you guys think about that? does NOR sucks!!!!!

Is it wise to run two different ANTI VIRUS on my system?noton

2 scanners active at the same time will interfere with each other, and may miss a virus, or may also give false positives. Settle on one. If you want a free one, use AntiVir, and get rid of Norton. If you have subscription time left on Norton, use it and it only until the subscription is up, then delete it totally, and install AntiVir. Also get Spybot Search and Destroy, and a Zone Alarm firewall.

no no really.you could overwork your computer and then it will probably fry it or it will cause it more virus's than before.so i suggest not to.
LOL!! EXACTLY the same here!!! Get rid of Norton, that's what I did anyway, and no problem ever again. LiveOne scan is really great!!! Avast, Live OneCare scan and XP firewall is all you need.
I would say no because i think that the programs could cancel each other out then they would be useless and a waste of money.
Yes Norton is crap. Please get somthing else.

Problem with internet browser(IE and Firefox)?

On my computer (Windows XP) after browsing for several hours, both browsers (IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.2, regular and safe mode) quit displaying any website. Nothing displays on Firefox, and IE says there is no connection. I can ping ip addresses and the localhost, and if I'm downloading any files or using bittorrent, they continue to work. I've tried the usual, clearing the cache, release/renew ip address, diagnose the connection with built in programs in windows XP. If it helps, I use CA's firewall and avast antivirus. The problem stops if I restart or log off and log on again. Any suggestions to point in the right direction would help, even if it isn't a full solution. I am usually good with computers, so don't be afraid to be technical.

Those names you saw being scanned in Avast were probably from your Message Archive. Yahoo Messenger creates a separate folder for each user you talk to, so that's probably what was being scanned.

To access your archive, click Contacts %26gt; Message Archive. From there you can read past conversations and click the Reply button to send the other user a new message.

SP2 means "Service Pack 2", as in Windows XP SP2. The pack contains several security and stability fixes, so it's good that you have 'em. But it's not enough. Which brings me to my point:

Assuming that you have a genuine copy of Windows (i.e. legal copy), go to the Windows Update Website (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/), have your Windows validated for authenticity first (sorry, it's required), and then download the latest updates (fixes) for your Windows and/or Internet Explorer (IE).

And BTW, just because you have updated anti-virus, anti-spyware or anti-adware software, an updated firewall, an updated IP blocklist tool or the final release of IE7 does not make you immune to "stability bugs", which is what I suspect is messing with you. So don't go thinking that you don't need these updates and that you can just forget about 'em. If you don't do this, sooner or later, you WILL pay the price for it.

For basic security required by personal users, you require ONE anti-virus, ONE firewall and at least TWO anti-spyware. I have given the links to the best you can have for free, in each category. Get them all.

AVG(Download this : avg75free_432a904.exe): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/...

a-squared Free(Download a-squared FREE): http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/down...

Windows Defender(only for genuine Windows XP): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/....

To activate the real-time protection of Windows Defender, go to Tools %26gt; Options and tick 'Use Real Protection'. In case you don't have genuine Windows, you can use Spyware Terminator as a good substitute to Windows Defender.

http://www.spywareterminator.com/...

Here are some security tips:

1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish, provided you use the real-time protection of only one of them.

I think i have a worm/virus.... help?

just today, every time i open microsoft outlook, it keeps duplicating incoming emails by the hundreds and then "stops responding". my guess is that there was some sort of worm in the email but have no idea what i should do. norton says nothing is wrong, avast antivirus says nothing is wrong... does this sound familiar to anyone and how should i go about fixing it.

I think i have a worm/virus.... help?spyware removal

Try Adware Free Edition

Try Ccleaner

Try Spybot Search and Destroy

If they all don't find anything, then the problem isn't on your PC, it's your email and there is nothing you can except changing your email or buying some kind of spam control software.

I think i have a worm/virus.... help?virus protection software

just to be safe delete all emails if you haven't opened them. I f you have it could be too late.Any spam not for you delete it. If it has inffected you contacts phone book only one thing to do delete it reinstall it from your XP cd. If Norton's didn't pick it up then your updates aren't up to date. Run you updates, one a week , always keep them upto date
install spybot search and destroy. It is a good antivirus and spyware removal
scan/remove using following antispywares

http://www.SecureMyWindows.com

http://www.superantispyware.com
Try first a Registry cleaner like wise registry cleaner, advanced windows care personal and the best one is max registry cleaner your pc might just be slow if it still persist then use Kaspersky Internet Security or ZoneAlarm Internet Security those are the best but if you want free then the best free one is Avast not not AVG and for the best Spyware detection is Spyware Doctor

Right, first stop worrying it's not the end of the world. Second it is a bit of a problem getting rid of it for us let alone a 13yr old who is panicking. Ask your dad to come on the computer with you and read this. Hi dad as you know your young lady is in a fix, I guarantee you she has done nothing wrong. This is a well known and insidious piece of spyware which can get anybody. If you help her sort it then get a good firewall, anti virus ,and antispy programme installed and keep them up to date. I seem to spend half my life sorting out my grandkids computers. Good luck and stay safe.

No antivirus or antispyware protection is perfect but a good mixture of the two will help you clean your system and hopefully keep it clean.

First of all update and run your own anti virus %26 anti spyware applications.

However, be advised that some infections will corrupt or disable your resident security products so here are a few online scans that may help you:

Norton - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/defau...

Panda - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/Ac...

Trend - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Next download, update and run a full scan using the following product:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

SuperAntiSpyware will remove the majority of difficult Trojans not just the easy ones.

If possible it is recommended that you load the application in normal mode but run it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. However, if you are badly infected you might need to run SuperAntiSpyware more than once to help clean your system. If the only infections now being shown are in System Restore, once you are completely satisfied that you can boot normally, you can either delete the infected restore points manually, or temporarily turn off System Restore.

Since your homepage is pointing to http://aprotectedpage.com, this means your PC is infected with a trojan called Zlob Trojan. In my experience, a program called SpyNoMore is your best bet in removing the Zlob trojan. By removing this trojan, you will also get rid of aprotectedpage.com. Another symptom of Zlob Trojan is that it generates fake warning messages like:

Is it worth paying for McAfee anti-virus software?

Can anyone advise what is best - it's for a home laptop that I don't use very often but mostly for internet (so don't mind if McAfee slows it down a little)....but couldn't afford to get it fixed if a huge bug crashed the whole system down....

Is it really better to pay for McAfee or are the free ones just as good? Also, what is spyware etc., do I need to download a few different types of protection?

Thanks! :)

Is it worth paying for McAfee anti-virus software?suzuki

Personally, I use the free ones. But if you've got cash, go ahead and buy. There's even a AVG pro that you can buy. Usually, these paid anti-virus programs have firewall and anti-spyware included. But you can use separate programs like Spyware Terminator and Zone Alarm Pro.

I use AVG not only at home, on my laptop but also at my business. I've had no problems with it, its easy to use, does a great job and isn't a pain like Mcafee. Actually our tech/computer guy at work recommended avg and I've never regretted it.
McAfee is software that has let me down, I still prefer Norton Anti virus.

If you can turn it on, do a spy ware and virus scan in safe mode. As soon as you turn the computer on start hitting F8 or F5 until you get a screen that gives you the option for safe mode. Then try to do the scans, if this is effective, go on line and download www.housecall.trendmicro.com and run this it takes a little while but it's free and does a decent job. If that doesn't work you will have to reformat or do a disk recovery which will wipe out everything including anything you've added aftermarket so think about it before you do it. Good Luck!
You are really screwed up. Sorry to say it so bluntly but baby you got it bad. If i were you I would scrub that system and rebuild it from the ground up. And make that ex of yours wear a condom next time he touches your mouse!
