Weird Crashing Error - Maybe Mobo? Please Read.?

Hello. I am fixing my brother-in-law's computer that my OTHER brother-in-law built with all kinds of stupid hacked beta versions of windows, etc...

- I did a clean install of a legit Windows 2K on a new harddrive.

- Because I didn't make the computer, I dont know what kind of MOBO it is. It has an onboard ethernet connection. I couldn't get it to work, so I put in a PCI ethernet card and installed the drivers and I am able to connect online

- Computer is running a GeForce FX 5700 LE video card. I DL'd the drivers, installed it.

- I downloaded and installed Firefox.

- DL'd Avast! Antivirus and ran it, did a boot scan, etc... no problems.

- I did this whole process TWICE to rule out a bad install of the OS

When I open up IE or Firefox and resize the window or attempt to generally move around, SOMETIMES it will throw an iexplorer.exe error. Sometimes it will simply crash the computer all together and force it to restart. All fans are working.

Suggestions? Or is it a lost cause?

probably a weak power supply....that or the ram is bad....

If you have an extra ram module you can pop in there to rule out ram, that will help narrow the search....

Why don't you download a free program that tells you ALL the info about your computer? Here's that link. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=belarc+... I find it extremely helpful in situations such as yours.
As you mentioned that the mobo had an integrated ethernet connection and above that you installed a PCI ethernet card that might be the reason try disabling the onboard ethernet connection by going to BIOS and disabling it...bcoz it seems that it is not disabled and causing a conflict...Try this out..

Go to http://www.filehippo.com and there is a list of free anti-virus programs also you could try the vista website to see what they suggest.
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free for life! Works great on my Vista box, too.

Yikes, I'd stick with one. If you've got norton, ditch the others, they are not nearly as good anyway. They can definitely conflict.

Better yet, let norton expire and get kaspersky. Norton is famous for being a big system hog.

Keep one regcleaner, and make it ccleaner. It's free, the safest, most conservative one.

You don't need to go nuts cleaning that up anyway, it's just full of tiny files that are causing no harm 99.9% of the time.

I really believ one anti virus is enough but please dump avg and avast especialy they are not very effective norton maybe a resource hog and a pain but its very effective if you can put up with nortons BS i use nod32 and have done quite a bit of research before i got it and WOW very small download about 15mb and maybe 18 because of updates but no more viruses for me none at all and i have downloaded some very malicious stuff it was able to remove. i have used avg,avast,avira,panda,norton and macaffe and so far kapersky and nod32 are my favorite they al have highest consumer rating for detection rates and for how easy it is to use.
Nortons! Get rid of it. I had a new laptop and withing 3 days I had to wipe my pc because of Nortons destroyed my Internet and my system restore. I have Avg. its ok.
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. I've actually seen where if you have multiple antivirus programs on your system, it can break them all and actually create more holes in your system than if you didn't have any.

Virus Win 32 or something else?

I have reserrected an old computer (4 years ols) by having more memory and XP put on.

The PC previously had AVG on (via dial up) and when connected to Bband I thought it would automatically update. However the version is out of date and not supported. I cannot remove it for some reason although I have done this via control panel (add/remove progs) nor can I download a fresh version as it keeps taking me back to the old registration page with the old number. Anyway it just will not up date. So I put avast on and ran it. This told me I have Win32. I ran PC doctor and this told me something else. What can I believe. How can I clean the machine and be sure it is clean.

Access to internet is limited on this machine but I do have access via another machine. Is there something I can do whilst off line? Can I load something onto a disc maybe, from the one machine and run it on the infected one?

If I buy, say, norton, will that detect and clean and protect in future.

This link (program) is reliable.

AVG is not a very good AV program therefore when it was running it would of missed a lot of viruses.

As for removing the old AVG try downloading %26 using a program like Hijackthis.

If your looking for a good AV program for the future, the best free one at the moment is the AOL one which is Kaspersky %26 if you wish to pay for the best then Nod32 is the answer.

I had Norton but it has expired and as my vaio is a new model some anti virus systems will not work with it. I gave Avast a go but after downloading it, it said it will not work with my model.

AVG has a free download and updates. Pretty good if you don't want to dish out more $$ for McAfee (my preferred anti virus - I'm a Norton hater!).

Best Antivirus Program For Win XP Home?

I seem to have a lot of trouble with getting trojans, viruses, etc. Most of the time my antivirus I use now (avast! home) will catch these things, but sometimes it won't.

I tend to download a LOT of content from torrents, like movies, tv shows, music and applications (to test to see if I want to buy them)

I suspect (more like assume) this is where they come from.

What do you all use for antivirus software and what in your opinion is the best one out there? I will buy it because I am getting sick of having to format my drive every few months because my virus program can detect the problems, but can't seem to fix them.
