AD-AWARE (from Lavasoft) for spyware.
Both offer free versions.

avg 7.5 free version works good
I got AVG free edition from grisoft . It has been the award winning free anti-virus several times especially for its low memory usage and easy tools update. I have it now for the fifth year , never got a virus and never slow down my computer. D'ont know one better than this... I think the web site is

I'm afraid that it really depends on your personal preference. Many people have said that using Ad-Aware or Spybot has kept their computer clean and safe; others prefer Webroot Spysweeper, Spyware Doctor, or other paid products. The same goes for antivirus--some people prefer AVG Free or avast! antivirus, and others prefer Norton, McAfee, or Kaspersky. I personally use AVG Free, Ad-Aware, and Spybot not because I personally like them, but because I cannot afford to buy the more expensive paid products. I'm afraid that if you truly want a secure system, then you'll either have to buy software or spend hours and hours searching for and testing the best antivirus and antispy program for your computer. I personally would recommend that you stick with what you have for now, and if anyone here has any suggestions you should try them out. (A word to the wise, however: if anyone recommends Spyware Terminator, DON'T try it. I personally had a horrible time with it because it had so many annoying alerts, but if you turn the alerts off then you won't know when spyware tries to invade your computer; also, Spyware Terminator may be free, but it's not from a 100% trustworthy source--Crawler, a metasearch engine that only recently broke off its ties with Ibis, an adware distributor.)
