avast is for viruses but your problem is spyware.

Download spybot search and destroy (just google it)

and scan your computer. That should help some, but you have the nasty type of spyware, which sometimes takes some manual removal.

One you need a popup blocker, both yahoo and google have toolbars that can be installed onto you IE or firefox browser, that contain popup blocker. Second you need spyware software, as that is what normally causes popups and not virus's. I would install spybot and adware se, to protect yourself against spyware.
I found google toolbar stopped a lot of mine.
