Need advice desprately!!!!!?

Our computer had trojans, spyware, adware, and everything in between that could be bad on it. My dad says that if we do the non-destructive system recovery (doesn't reformat harddrive) that the computer will be fine and all these things willgo bye-bye. I think that we need to reformat in order to get the stuff off because this stuff is in the TEMP folder. Am I right and if I can get rid of this stuff without reformating what anti viruse, spyware, and/or adware program should I use? My friend suggested aVast antiviruse and we're using Windows XP Home Edition Servicepack 1 if that helps you figure it out. Our personal info is trying to be taken, we're being used as a proxy, all the temporary internet files from the proxy users are being stored on our computer, and we're being used as file storage too if I forgot to mention that. Any help is appreciated!

A non destructive system recovery will not work because it will leave all your files and infections intact.

Free - For starters, download, update and run a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) http://www.superantispyware.com/

SAS is an exceptionally easy to use application that will remove the majority of difficult Trojans and Worms, not just the easy ones. In addition it has the ability to remove Vundo and Smitfraud infections. SAS can lock your home page to prevent browser hi-jacking attempts.
